Nissan will build battery factory in the UK Leave a comment

Nissan confirmed it has invested 1.4 billion US dollars with Vision AESC to build large battery factory in the UK, which can provide power for 100,000 vehicles a year. In addition, Nissan will also launch a new crossover model.
This plant will be located in Sunderland, northeast England. It is jointly funded by Nissan, Envision AESC and the local government. The annual production capacity is initially set at 9GWh, which can create 6,200 local jobs.
For the United Kingdom, Nissan’s establishment of a battery factory has made up for the gap in the battery industry. The United Kingdom lacks battery production and supply chains. The production of electric vehicles in the United Kingdom requires the import of batteries from foreign countries, which means that a large number of jobs will be lost. More importantly, in the past 40 years, the United Kingdom has been an important gateway for investors to export products to other parts of Europe. If the United Kingdom cannot establish battery production and supply chains at the same time, it will be investor-friendly when the automotive industry is electrified. The reputation of the portal may be damaged.
Data shows that 1.3 million cars were produced in the UK in 2019, and more than half of them were sold in Europe.
Nissan said that its electric vehicles produced in Sunderland will be exported to the European market, using the Alliance CMF-EV platform, which is shared by Renault, Mitsubishi and Nissan. It is reported that Nissan’s Sunderland plant will be one of the first battery plants in Europe.
